This continuum was developed from The Ontario Curriculum Grades K-8 Mathematics 1997 by the Peel District School Board in collaboration with Hamilton Wentworth District School Board.

Mathematics is learned developmentally. Students will learn at different rates, in different ways, and not always in the same order. For this reason, is it dangerous for a teacher to look only at the expectations for the grade they are teaching. They must know what has come before and what will come after what they are teaching in the developmental sequence.

"It is essential that teachers read through the expectations for all the grades rather than just the grade they are teaching. The specific expectations for each grade should be seen in the context of the overall process of building mathematical knowledge and skills from grade to grade." (Ontario Mathematics Curriculum, page 6)

Each expectation statement includes an Object - a description of WHAT students must learn about - and an Action - a description of what students must BE ABLE TO DO. Objects and Actions have been used as the organizers in these continuums. All expectations from the curriculum have been included.

A hard copy of the full package of continuums K-8 for all 5 strands can be purchased for $10/copy. To order, contact Irene.mcevoy@peelsb.com
